Nelson W Armour
Fine Art Photography
This exhibit shows four series of work of Nelson W Armour, a Chicago artist whose work focuses on rural and urban landscapes, environmental portraiture and photojournalism projects.
Four by One
The portraits of landscape workers at work and at home are intended to bridge the divide between how we normally see service workers, at their job, and the reality of each having full lives. This series is an homage to the photographer Milton Rogovin whose portraits of industrial workers at work and at home inspired Armour.

surface tension: beauty and fragility in lake michigan
This work is in collaboration with Ted Glasoe, an Evanston based photographer. Images are shown in pairs, with one of Glasoe’s iconic images of Lake Michigan and one of Armour’s altered landscapes showing the serious environmental issues in Lake Michigan. In One Grove Gallery Armour shows a number of his altered images.
In “Beyond,” Armour’s images are meant to imply, to suggest, or to infer. Each environment is unique and the image aims at transcending the immediate into a mysterious realm. The viewer is invited to enter this territory and discover something new or different.

portraits of protest
Since the election of Donald Trump, Armour with photographer Michael Kreuser formed a group called Artists for Action Chicago. This group of Chicago area artists stands for progressive values that advance humanity and protect the environment. Their intention is to use our art to witness, communicate, and advocate on issues of social justice. Armour took these particular portraits at 16 different rallies or marches over the past year.
